While it’s best known for having the largest ski area with the largest vertical drop (1,200 feet) in the state, the warmer months bring golf, tennis, lift rides, live music series and plenty of scenic vistas.

Winter brings an average of 78 inches of natural snow to the delight of skiers and snowboarders on the 21 slopes. The eight high speed lifts transport up to 13,460 passengers per hour to the summit of 5,300 feet! Families especially love the snow tubing and 10,000 square foot ice skating rink. Snowshoe tours are also offered.

Spring brings the opening of the popular public golf and tennis club, owned and operated by the Village. Voted the #2 short course in the USA (Golf Advisor, 2020), the 18-hole golf course has immaculate greens and plenty of mountain views. Next door, play on six tennis courts, meticulously maintained of fast-dry, Har-tru clay. Sign up for men’s, women’s, and mixed play “friendly doubles’’ or take lessons from a pro.

A favorite summer tradition is the outdoor music series, Grillin’ & Chillin’, (photo at top). Enjoy live bands on 15 Wednesday evenings while watching the sunset. Bring your dancing shoes! Also each summer, the ski slopes transform into a network of downhill mountain bike trails. Scenic lift rides take you to the summit for panoramic views. If you enjoy creative art, don’t miss the Fine Art & Master Craft Festivals held on two weekends.

Due to its location, Sugar Mountain typically has the first fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains. For a unique way to watch the leaf show, ride the chair lift up 1,200 feet in elevation. Also celebrate with Oktoberfest – complete with Bavarian music, costume contest, kids’ fun center and plenty of beer.

Staying on the mountain in a vacation home, condo or log cabin is rewarded with some of the best mountain views in the South. Located between Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain, find many more adventures nearby including alpine coaster, gem mining, whitewater rafting, wineries and hiking. Unwind at 25 restaurants within 5 miles, along with plenty of galleries and boutiques to browse.
