In the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the air is thin and the light filters through ancient hemlocks, a unique tradition unfolds every August.

From September 15-19, the Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival transforms the scenic High Country into a sprawling, open-air studio, inviting artists and art lovers alike to witness the magic of creation in real-time.
For four days, the picturesque streets of Blowing Rock and the rugged vistas of the Blue Ridge Parkway become populated with easels and sun-hatted painters. These artists work “en plein air”—a French expression meaning “in the open air”—racing against the shifting sun to capture the essence of the Appalachian landscape. From the historic architecture of Main Street to the misty depths of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, the festival celebrates the raw, unscripted beauty of North Carolina’s high country.
The event, hosted by the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM), is more than just a competition; it is a community-wide celebration of country lifestyle. Visitors strolling through town might stumble upon an artist painting a hidden garden or a wide-angle vista of the “Blowing Rock” itself. It is a rare opportunity to engage with creators, asking about their palettes and processes as the scenery before them is immortalized on canvas.
The festival culminates in the highly anticipated Wet Paint Show and Sale. On the final Saturday, the museum fills with the scent of fresh oil paint as the week’s work is displayed for the public. It is a fast-paced, exciting event where collectors can purchase one-of-a-kind pieces that are, quite literally, still drying.
Whether you are a seasoned collector or a weekend wanderer, the festival offers a perfect slice of mountain life: a blend of quiet contemplation, artistic rigor, and the breathtaking, natural splendor that makes Blowing Rock a timeless destination.
