There’s so much to see and do when you visit North Carolina’s High Country. An attraction that should make your must-do list is a trip to Linville Caverns. Linville Caverns are the only show caverns in North Carolina. The whole family will love touring these jaw-dropping caverns filled with unique formations, an underground stream and so much more.
Linville Caverns History
After centuries of being unknown to man, Linville Caverns was first explored in the early 1800s by Henry E. Colton. Colton was on a fishing expedition when he saw fish swimming in and out of a rock formation. Through a small opening in the mountain he discovered trout swimming in an underground stream. In 1858, Colton wrote about his exploration in an issue of N.C. Presbyterian and described the “hidden world” in the mountain range.
In 1937, Linville Caverns opened to the public and has since seen a number of renovations to make the caverns safe for guests of all ages to tour.
