Spend Your Winter Outdoors in the High Country

Spend Your Winter Outdoors in the High Country

Most people feel the need to wrap a warm blanket around themselves during the winter months and stay indoors until the first buds of spring appear. But imagine sitting in a ski lift on a crisp and clear winter day. With a couple skis strapped on or a snowboard, the butterflies and excitement fill you as you raise to the top of the hill. Then you’re dropped off. You look down, take a deep breath, and off you go. There’s nothing that says winter fun than winter sports. If this appeals to you, then a winter holiday in the High Country is where you want to be. North Carolina’s High Country has some of the best snow slopes on the east coast. And when mother nature doesn’t give enough of the white stuff, most outdoor locations have snowmakers. Even experienced winter sportsmen come out for the thrill of Appalachian snow sports. It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an expert, there will be something for you in the High Country. So slap on your winter coat and boots, and head to the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Here are some of the most popular winter sports:

Skiing/Snowboarding

Hit the hills! Take on the ancient sport of skiing. Or try out the youthful sport, snowboarding. The High Country has bunny hills for beginners and even a double black diamond slope for the adventurous expert. There are three resorts where one can experience the thrill of racing downhill on the snow.

Ice Skating

When winter comes, the ice beckons. There is something peaceful about sliding across the ice and feeling all your troubles glide away. Though indoor ice skating rinks are fine for the warmer months, nothing compares to skating surrounded by the beauty of nature. All three ski resorts offer outdoor skating rinks in addition to their slopes.

Snow Tubing

Snow Tubing is fun for all ages, whether you need a smooth lane for the kids or an exciting one for the adventurous. The High Country has the largest tubing park on the East Coast! Hawksnest Snow Tubing has over 30 lanes of frigid fun.

Snowshoeing

Want to enjoy a peaceful walk on a snowy mountain trail? Beech Mountain, NC has made it easy by offering snowshoe rentals. Don’t let a little snow stop you from experiencing a beautiful nature walk.

Sledding

Want an outdoor adventure with the family, but don’t have the funds for a ski trip? The town of Beech Mountain is opening up a town sledding hill for free! And on February 6, 2016, come out to the hill for a Snowman Building Contest.
